AN ANALYSIS OF NEED ANALYSIS ENGLISH LEARNING MATERIALS INTEGRATED WITH LOCAL WISDOM OF THE SECOND SEMESTER AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION OF FKIP UNIVERSITAS ISLAM RIAU

English language proficiency is very important in today's era of globalization. However, students in English language education programs have difficulty mastering the language because the teaching materials used are not relevant to their cultural context and daily lives. This study aims to analyze the need for English teaching materials that are integrated with the local wisdom of Riau Malay for second-semester students of the English Education Study Program, FKIP, Universitas Islam Riau. By integrating local wisdom, it is hoped that more meaningful learning can be created, learning motivation can be increased, and their cultural identity can be maintained. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through questionnaires given to 66 second-semester students and in-depth interviews with lecturers who teach English courses. Needs analysis was conducted based on three main components, namely needs, deficiencies, and desires. The questionnaire covered information about students' communication needs, current English proficiency levels, learning difficulties, preferences for learning materials and media, and interest in the integration of local cultural content. The research findings indicate that students strongly desire and support the integration of local culture into English language learning. They face several challenges, such as a limited vocabulary related to local culture, difficulty explaining traditions in English, and a lack of self-confidence. Additionally, students also desire more engaging and interactive learning through the use of folktales, local wisdom, digital media, and activities such as role-playing and presentations. This indicates that the development of teaching materials based on local culture is crucial for enhancing students’ understanding, language skills, and self-confidence.
