An Analysis On English Pronunciation Of Ninth Grade Pasir Pangaraian Malay Students At Smp Islam Al-Muflihun Pasir Pangaraian Rokan Hulu

This study is about the problem of phonological interferences happens because of the habit of the speakers in using mother tongue, Pasir Pangaraian Malay language, even when they speak English. The objectives of the study are to find the influence of Pasir Pangaraian Malay Language to English pronunciation in pronouncing the velar ([k]) sound at the end of the words for the Ninth Grade Pasir Pangaraian Malay Students at SMP Islam Al-Muflihun Pasir Pangaraian Rokan Hulu and what factors influenced that pronunciation differences. This research design is descriptive qualitative research. The population in this research are the Ninth-Grade students at SMP Islam Al-Muflihun Pasir Pangaraian Rokan Hulu. The total of respondents is 29 according to Arikunto’s theory where the amount of population less than 100, all the population automatically become respondent. As the instrument, researcher used test script in form of word lists as pronunciation tests. Based on the research results, it is known that the subject made pronunciation errors. From 29 students in reading test script, the researcher found 357 errors. The researcher’s analysis focused on the pronunciation of velar /k/ sound. The percentage of all correct pronunciation for sound of velar /k/ at the end of the words is 38.4% and the incorrect pronunciation is 61.6%. The factors of native language, innate phonetic ability, identity and language ego, and exposure has been proved. By the fact, student’s pronunciation still affected by their Malay language phonology system where the sound of velar /k/ at the end of the word does not exist and replace by sound of glottal /Ɂ/. Students SMP Islam Al-Muflihun also have problems to pronounce the sound of vowel diphthong correctly according to IPA transcriptions. Such as on look, black, work, bank, lack, stock for vowel sound and make, take, and like for diphthong sounds.
