Portraying Students Dfficulties in Writing Recount Text At 10 th Grade Of SMAN 1 Tebing Tinggi
Writing is one of the language skills that need to be developed in studying
English because writing is one of the most important English language skills in
the teaching and learning process. Writing recount text is not easy because
English is considered as a foreign language. The purpose of this research is to
find out what difficulties students face and the causes of students' difficulties in
writing recount texts at the 10th grade of SMAN 1 Tebing Tinggi. In this study, the
researcher tried to find out the students' difficulties in writing recount texts and
the causes of students' difficulties in writing recount texts.
This research methodology was qualitative research. Researcher took 31
respondents from class 10 SMAN 1 Tebing Tinggi as a sample. The research
instruments were questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire consists of
twelve statements and is divided into three indicators, namely orientation, series
of events, and reorientation. The interview was divided into three indicators,
namely psychological problems, linguistic problems, and cognitive problems.
The result shows that there are three difficulties find in writing recount
texts, namely difficulties in understanding the generic structure of recount texts
(orientation, event, and reorientation). Students' difficulties in writing orientation
were: 24.5% of students did not understand or had difficulties writing orientation
in recount text; 25.2% of students did not understand or had difficulties in writing
events in recount text; and 25% of students do not understand or have difficulties
in writing reorientation in recount text. And there are three causes that make
students have difficulties in writing recount texts that the researcher found,
namely psychological problems, linguistic problems, and cognitive problems. The
researcher found that, for psychological problems, some students have fears,
anxiety, and worries about writing recount texts. For linguistic problems, some
students have grammatical errors and lack vocabulary when writing recount
texts. For cognitive problems, some students still lack an understanding of the
concepts in recount texts.
